GNSF! ‘Nightwalker’ Takes You to Tijuana’s Red Light District

Source: Tijuana’s Dancing Strangers have released their latest music video, “Nightwalker.”

The track is off their third and latest EP, Lost in Lust, which will be released as a cassette collectible from Prima Crush in July (The Lost in Lust EP can also be downloaded on Bandcamp). “Nightwalker” has an ’80s New Wave sound with hints of the Cure and Joy Division. If you haven’t wondered about Tijuana’s red-light district, you will now, thanks to this video — I sure did.

On Avenida Revolución, there’s a mixture of taco shops, turista gift shops, music venues, bars and strip clubs — but if you veer off the strip, you’ll end up in Zona Norte, which is prominently featured in “Nightwalker.” Eric Wendt, a friend and fan of Dancing Strangers, makes his music-video directorial debut; the clip echoes some of the lonely and sometimes dark scenes of prostitution in such films as Taxi Driver and He Got Game.

For the Dancing Strangers duo, the red-light district is a place of mystery and fascination. Even as a young boy, vocalist Astronauta Jackson couldn’t help but acknowledge the existence of prostitutes in his hometown, because he would often have to walk through Zona Norte. “Nightwalker” is a sureal and voyeuristic ode to the “freaks come out at night.”

“To me, it’s a small part of all the myths behind our city: ‘It is what it is!’ ” Jackson said. “And to some, it’s immoral, to others it’s unreal, but to us, it’s part of our city’s culture.”

Watch “Nightwalker” on Vimeo. Dancing Strangers have the following upcoming shows in Tijuana and San Diego:

June 12 @ Tin Can Ale House June 16 @ Til-Two Club with Lorelle Meets the Obsolete and Voice Actor July 5 @ El Patio de la Mi-ja (La Mezcalera in Tijuana)
