Oyé vato, you got one last week to check out the Chicano Broadway masterpiece “Zoot Suit.” The playwright, Luis Valdez gives us a lesson in pachuco history by way of edutainment. The leads “El Pachuco” (Raul Cardona) and Henry Reyna (Lakin Valdez, playwright’s son) are all the way gangsta pachuco down to the crease.
The Broadway musical is as “El Pachuco” describes “part-fact and part-fiction” based on a L.A. crime from the 40s. The racial profiling pachucos faced back then are the same that modern Chicanos face – this play is so relevant today it’s not even funny and GN$F! is giving it intelligent hoodlum certification!
Performances go on until Sunday Aug. 12. Purchase tickets.
