Wowzers, some folks are disturbed by the dark imagery Kanye West is bringing. But remember how disturbing Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” was back in the day? Photographer-turned-big-time-music video director, Jake Nava brings “Monster” track to life visually. Well sort of to life. Ironically, all the background models are either dead or about to be deaded. Nicki Minaj puts on a great Jekyll and Hyde performance. Kanye makes sure to show off his bottom diamond row of teeth with several close-ups. He even has a sort of D’Angelo “How Does It Feel” moment as he goes shirtless, while being groped by red-manicured females. I love the gothic theme in this video. But, like The Source Magazine reported, “It looks a little un-finished”. I guess the editor fell asleep, because we catch one of the dead models accidentally blink her eyes.
Overall, it was nice to not see: strippers, fake money being tossed around, and liquor bottles being poured liked there’s no tomorrow. Instead we get an out-the-box hip-hop music video for 2010. Edgy, dark, and solid performances by each rapper. This video gets five jalapeños from me. Hot!
