Okay so wtflocka?! with Shyne. He’s one of those rappers that you root for and hope the best for. You almost feel bad for the 10 year prison sentence he had to serve on behalf of Puff Daddy, he did after all try to play security guard for the mogul.
In 1998 Notorious B.I.G. producer Clark Kent heard the Belizean rapper freestyle in his Biggie-esque voice outside of a barbershop. Clark got him to Bad Boy Records to start recording. Who can forget the thunderous bass heavy 2000 debut of his self-titled album with Bad Boyz ft. Barrington Levy, and Bonnie and Shyne, and Dear America?
During his incarceration Shyne released a horrible in-prison album recorded via telephone! Po was finally released in ’09 from prison, deported back to Belize, gets dissed by 50 Cent live on video, converts to Orthodox Judaism, gets a XXL cover story. What hip-hop head is not going to wonder whether he’ll enjoy platinum success again?
So Shyne is back with a new single and music video The Original. I was waiting to hear that deep chested vocals that he was known for. But I guess he changed up his vocals to move with the times for another larger-than-life rapper, Rick Ross.
I’m sure the video concept wasn’t all Shyne’s fault probably the director’s lack of depth. But if you’re in Mexico, and there are helpless Mexican campers, why all the black-and-white Black leader posters? Malcom X, Nelson Mandela, including posters, ahem…Shyne? In the beginning of the video, the old man is praying for The One: Shyne. You’re led to believe that Shyne was gonna save the campers from the evil rifle toters and help them from chasing-their-tales. But he never does. While watching this video I kept thinking of a similar music video but actually was incredible and inspiring…Nas’s One Mic.
Will someone please shoot Shyne another video? He cannot afford to look funny. Bring back that gritty, Barrington Levy, Bonnie and Shyne rhyme style. It would be nice to hear that on the radio and clubs again.
