In a recent panel “Hip Hop Nation Call To Action”, Young Guru held the mic up as an emcee would on the stage except he was without a music track, instead he was backed by the emotion and conviction of his heart. He boldly says record companies won’t exist in ten years. Also that really, record companies are in costume because they underneath it all, they are loan companies. Furthermore, artists should be, “understanding that we don’t need to sign up to be slaves.” He continues to cite actual instances like that of platinum-selling rapper Nas’s disputed 7-album deal with his label. And he continues to educate on the perils of ‘360 Deals‘ that record labels get artists to sign.
Nowadays to speak out against record labels would be considered suicide for an artist’s career. But for Rocafella engineer and producer, Young Guru, it is a call to action to empower artists with the knowledge he has gained from working with billion dollar record labels. He truly, has took a leap of faith to speak out and educate.
