“Back in the days on the boulevard of Linden, we used to kick routines and presence was fittin’. It was I the abstract  And me the five footer. I kicks the mad style so step off the frankfurter” – Check The Rhime (1991).

Lyrics from the golden era of hip-hop. The one that gave us A Tribe Called Quest. Who can forget one of the most recited lines that taught rappers about the music business, “Industry rule #4,080: Record company people are shady”?

One thing that is hard to find is a well-done hip-hop documentary with a good explanation for the 1998 breakup of one of hip-hop’s most beloved groups, A Tribe Called Quest.

Well, actor and admitted hip-hop addict, Michael Rapaport, has made that film. He has presented his film Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest to the Sundance Festival this past January which was picked up by Sony.

The documentary was born from his love for the group and told the Carson Daly Show that the groups breakup, “was like my parents getting divorced.” And also added, “Telling this story was not only a labor of love but also the most fulfilling accomplishment of my career.”

Beats, Rhymes & Life chronicles primarily the 2006 reunion of Phife Dawg, Q-Tip, Jarobi White, and Ali Shaheed Muhammad. It’s going to be a must see because you’re going to want to know why Q-Tip doesn’t want any part of the movie’s release. It’s the showdown between Phife Dawg and Q-Tip. It includes interviews with Prince Paul, Quest, Mos Def, Large Professor, and Monie Love.
