“Well, I don’t know what will happen now. We’ve got some difficult days ahead. But it really doesn’t matter with me now, because I’ve been to the mountaintop.” Those prophetic words that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. told to his audience on April 3rd 1968 at a church in Memphis, were to be part of his last speech ever given, “I’ve Been To The Mountain Top”. When I first heard the speech when I was in film school I became flustered with inspiration and pain. To think that this great man had died “for our sins” just like Jesus. But I guess great men have to die in order for change to happen.
Celebrate the life of Dr. King by walking the walk that he had worked so hard to give us. Know and understand others. If you notice you have all black friends. If you notice you have all Mexican friends….etc., try getting to know someone of another color. You may be surprised how much you can learn from stepping outside your comfort zone. It kills me how our communities fail and fall to poverty because of our ‘crabs in a barrel’ mentality. The civil rights movement is still not done and we have much work to do.
RIP Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. January 15, 1929 – April 4, 1968
