And so what of Malcolm X’s family?

Malcolm X’s children have tarnished the legacy of their father with legal woes, crime, and greed. It has been 46 years since the terrible assassination of Malcolm X. Today marks his 86th birthday. He and his wife Betty Shabazz birthed six daughters. His last two, were twins, Malikah and Malaak, who were born after his assassination in 1965.

The sad thing is that Malikah tarnished the family name with a criminal record. She was arrested in Feb. 23, 2011 in North Carolina on warrants from New York, where she has numerous charges including swindling more than $55,000 via credit card fraud out of Khaula Bakr, 70, the widow of a bodyguard who was with Malcolm X when he was assassinated in 1965.

Malikah for the past ten years has been in a fued with her two sisters, Malaak and Ilyasah, who are the administrators of the Malcolm X estate since their mother’s passing in 1997. Malikah is accusing her sisters of, “spending estate money on themselves while allowing property and other estate assets to languish and a tax bill to skyrocket.”

This feud has held up the long-awaited treasure trove of Malcolm X’s and Dr. Betty Shabazz’s never-before-seen speeches and four journals which value more than $1.4 million. Malcolm X’s journals are highly sought after by publishers because they’re writings from his trips to the Middle East and Africa, where he had a change of heart on race relations with the “white-man”.

Dr. Betty Shabazz’s passing was extremely unfortunate. In 1995, her daughter Qubilah, was arrested for allegedly attempting to murder Nation of Islam leader, Louis Farrakhan. During her trial, Betty took in Qubilah’s son while she went under a two-year sentence of psychological treatment. She got the lesser sentence with the help of Farrakhan saying that he did not think she tried to kill him.

Malcolm X's grandson, set fire to Dr. Betty Shabazz's apartment, the burn injuries ultimately killed her 3 weeks later.

Under Betty’s care, Qubilah’s son, Malcolm set fire to her New York apartment. It caused Betty to suffer burns to 80 percent of her body – three weeks later she died. And her grandson, Malcolm, was sentenced to 18 years in a juvenile detention center for manslaughter and arson. He was released from Attica in 1997. The irony is back in 1965, Qubilah, who was only four years-old at the time, woke her parents in the middle night screaming the house was on fire.

One week later Qubilah, her mother, and sisters witnessed the assassination of Malcolm X.
