Berkeley, Calif. rapper, Lil B, is not coming-out-of-the-closet, nor is he trying to mock the gay and lesbian community with his next album title, “I’m Gay.”
The rapper explains to Mtv, “I’m very gay, but I love women. I’m not attracted to men in any way. I’ve never been attracted to a man in my life.”
“But yes I am gay, I’m so happy. I’m a gay, heterosexual male. I got major love for the gay and lesbian community, and I just want to push less separation and that’s why I’m doing it.”
He first announced the album title at the Coachella music festival. Lil B admittedly acknowledges that his own fans have turned on him – has even received death threats – but, it confirms the ignorance and homophobia that runs rampant in hip-hop.
What does the GLAAD, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, have to say about the album title? They’re for it.
“As a lyricist, Lil B knows that words matter,” a spokesperson for the organization said. “Slurs have the power to fuel intolerance. We hope that Lil B’s album title is not just a gimmick, and is really a sincere attempt to be an ally. He has the platform and the voice. We hope he uses it in a positive way.”
In hip-hop nobody wants to talk about HIV, AIDS, or gay activities – unless of course, it is being thrown around as a diss to put down someone else.
Lil B described himself as a “defender of human rights.” He concluded, “And one-hundred years later – people are gonna thank me ’cause people are gonna be free. I spoke up and I did it…and I don’t regret it.”
