Wowzers Cadowzers! For the past two days I saw the name, Rebecca Black, trending on Twitter. And I ignored it. But tonight, my curiosity got the best of me and I googled her name. What came up was a music video to my surprise. Having such a suburbian name – I thought that she would have been involved in some sort salacious scandal – but no – this 13-year-old surburbian is nothing but American Pie and Lady Gaga is in support.
What surprises me moreover, is the critical response she is receiving. America for the most part, is calling her cheesy. When I watched the video, I thought, “How innocent, how Leave It To Beaver.” It really was refreshing to see and hear the virgin-like content that Rebecca Black offers, in contrast to the kill-kill-kill, fukc-you-pay-me, sex-tape era that we live in 2011.
At a recent engagement for Google featuring the pop diva herself, Lady Gaga defiantly responded to a cynical music fan, “I think it’s fantastic. I think Rebecca Black is a genius and anyone who is telling her that she’s cheesy is full of shit.”
When Black got word of this news she told Mtv, “I freaked out. I’m 13 and I never thought Lady Gaga would even know my name. I’m the kind of girl that dances to Lady Gaga with a hairbrush in her room at night.”
Before Lady Gaga’s cosign, Black had already gotten 51 million and counting views on YouTube. Black’s mother spent $2,000 on her music video – not bad for a grass-roots-American Pie-suburbian campaign. My thing is why are people so defiant about her success? Is it because she comes off so innocent and safe and we’re so anti-that? Cold naysayers like, YouTube vlogger, It’s Kingsley Bitch, went as far as calling her a,”stupid bitch.” – not cool– and now that a Lady Gaga is cosigning her – will people change their mind because a powerful celeb said so?
Will the sheep follow? #zeitgeist
