CBS2 reporter Serene Branson could not form any words on her live coverage at the 2011 Grammys. Despite looking alert, polished, and beautiful….for 15 seconds her words were slurred as if her mouth was under dental anesthesia or similar to being intoxicated with alcohol.
I first saw this video at WorldStarHipHop.com and I admit I was in out-of-control laughter. But the more I played the video the more I wanted to decode her words. And it was difficult to decipher any sort of words.
It turns out that she may have suffered a stroke live on-air. Several doctors have took a look at the footage and say it could be apashia. Aphasia usually comes on suddenly after a stroke or head injury, but can also progress gradually from a growing brain tumor or degenerative disease.
“[That’s a] pretty scary clip,” said Dr. Larry Goldstein, director of Duke Stroke Center in Durham, N.C. “She appears to have an aphasia, [or] problem with expressive language, and right-sided facial weakness. Although this can be caused by other conditions, it is very concerning for stroke.”
The American Stroke Association says that if a person shows any sign of a stroke, including difficulty speaking, she should get to the hospital immediately.
CBS spokesperson noted on their website, “Serene Branson was examined by paramedics on scene immediately after her broadcast. Her vital signs were normal. She was not hospitalized. As a precautionary measure, a colleague gave her a ride home and she says that she is feeling fine this morning.”
They also wanted to note, “Serene is a two time Emmy nominee and the recipient of the Frank Shakespeare Award for Outstanding Achievement in Journalism. Born and raised in the Los Angeles area and proud Bruin, Serene is thrilled to be reporting on stories in her hometown.”
