In Westminster, Calif., stands a billboard ad that reads, “Don’t believe in God? You’re not alone.”
The ad was paid for on behalf of a philanthropist from Philadelphia to support the Orange County Coalition for Reason (NCOR), the local chapter of a national atheist coalition.
The point of our ongoing nationwide awareness campaign is to reach out to the millions of atheists and agnostics living in the United States,” said Fred Edwords, national director of the United Coalition of Reason,”
“Such nontheists sometimes don’t realize there’s a community for them because they’re inundated with religious messages at every turn. We hope our effort will serve as a beacon and let them know they aren’t alone.”
The “Godless” ads have also appeared in Los Angeles, Fresno, San Joaquin, and Sacramento, and in Oklahoma, Texas, Delaware, Washington, Utah and Missouri.
Westminster Mayor Margie Rice says the sign will “turn her stomach”, but she understands it is a right to free speech. A pastor of a Presbyterian Church neighboring the ad, quoted the bible to describe the nontheistic group, “he who doesn’t know God is foolish.”
The NCOR says its mission is to give a home and support network to the 15 percent of Americans who don’t subscribe to a religion.
